BuildNotch or Windows Widgets?
Both put small pieces of information a quick action away. One opens a dedicated board. The other expands from the top of your screen around the work you already have open.
The main difference is where the information lives.
Microsoft's Widgets Board is a Windows 11 surface opened from the taskbar, with Win + W, or with a touch swipe. It collects widgets from supported apps in one board. BuildNotch is a separate Windows app whose compact notch expands into music, focus, tasks, projects and developer tools.
What changes during a work session
Open the Widgets Board from the taskbar, press Win + W, or swipe from the left on a touch screen.
Use the compact top-of-screen notch and expand it when you need a control or card.
Small cards supplied by Windows and supported apps, arranged in the board.
A personal workspace with music controls, tasks, notes, projects, GitHub activity, AI app shortcuts, clipboard and code tools.
Pin, move and resize supported widgets; available choices depend on installed providers and region.
Choose the cards and shortcuts that matter to your own workflow, with app appearance and placement settings.
You want a broad glance at supported widgets and are happy to open a panel.
You want quick access to a few work controls while moving among apps.
Windows Widgets is built into Windows 11. BuildNotch is a separate app. This compares interaction patterns and documented features; it does not claim a measured speed or resource advantage.
Which should you use?
Use Windows WidgetsWhen the built-in board is enough
It is the straightforward choice for a glanceable collection of supported widgets and no extra app to install.
Built into Windows 11Use BuildNotchWhen the top edge should work harder
Choose it if music, focus sessions, project links and developer tools belong in one expandable space near your current window.
