Start with the work you want at the top of your screen.
Both apps turn the top of a Windows screen into an expandable workspace. Winotch is a task and file hub: its published v1.0.0 list includes a task board, calendar, launcher, file shelf and Pomodoro. BuildNotch is oriented around music, focus, projects, clipboard, AI app shortcuts and GitHub activity.
This is a BuildNotch-authored comparison. The Winotch column uses its current site and June 30, 2026 v1.0.0 changelog; the BuildNotch column reflects the current desktop app. A feature missing from a public list is described as undocumented, not impossible.
The documented features, side by side.
| What matters | Winotch | BuildNotch |
|---|---|---|
| Notch layout | An expandable floating pill that can be dragged anywhere; standard and compact sizes, plus slow, standard and fast animation speeds. | A top-of-screen notch with an expanded card workspace, configurable screen placement and a separate floating focus timer. |
| Tasks | Create, edit, prioritize, date and pin tasks; move them between To Do, Doing and Done; filter by All, Open, Done and Late. | Tasks and project cards live alongside notes and project shortcuts. The focus timer can be detached from the notch. |
| Calendar | Month and week views; dated tasks appear in the calendar and can be edited there. | The current BuildNotch workspace is centered on tasks and projects rather than a calendar view. |
| Focus timer | Focus, short break and long break modes with configurable durations, task linking and a completed-session count. | Focus and break sessions with adjustable durations. Drag the Pomodoro out onto the desktop and choose from 7 visual themes. |
| Files and launcher | Drag files in or out, copy paths, and transfer a file to a phone over the local network with a QR code; launch pinned apps. | A file tray and favorite app shortcuts. BuildNotch does not claim Winotch’s QR phone-transfer workflow. |
| Music and developer tools | The current official feature list does not describe music controls, GitHub activity or AI app discovery. | Windows media controls with album art; GitHub contribution view, project links, installed AI app shortcuts, clipboard history and a code playground. |

A practical choice for a workday.
If you plan the day around due dates, move tasks through a board and occasionally move a file to your phone, Winotch has a coherent workflow. Its task statuses, calendar views and QR transfer are specific, documented features—not generic “productivity” claims.
If you spend the day moving among code, AI tools, GitHub, copied snippets and music, BuildNotch keeps those items in one place. Start a focus session, drag its Pomodoro onto the desktop when you want the timer visible, and pick one of the 7 timer themes. The detached timer and themes are additions to that flow; they do not replace Winotch’s calendar or task-linked sessions.
What the feature lists do not prove.
Winotch describes a movable notch, two sizes and three animation speeds. BuildNotch describes an attached workspace and a detachable timer. These are different layout choices. We have not run a controlled side-by-side CPU, RAM or battery benchmark, so this article makes no performance ranking.
Winotch’s public v1.0.0 notes do not mention music or GitHub features. That is a limit of the available description, not proof that a later version cannot add them. Check its live changelog before choosing on that basis.
Which should you choose?
Choose Winotch if your notch should be a task board, calendar, launcher and file-sharing spot, with a Pomodoro linked to tasks.
Choose BuildNotch if your notch should sit beside a developer workflow: music, notes, clipboard, project shortcuts, GitHub activity, AI apps and a focus timer you can drag onto the desktop.
