Start with the kind of notch you want.
Both apps put music and a focus timer at the top of Windows. Smart Notch, as described in its Microsoft Store listing, is a rich media and system surface: synced lyrics, reactive visuals, device controls, hardware readings and alerts. BuildNotch puts music and focus beside developer and project tools.
The overlap is real. Smart Notch also lists a task list and work/break sessions, so this is not a comparison between an app with focus tools and one without them. The choice is what else you want in the same space.
The documented features, side by side.
| What matters | Smart Notch | BuildNotch |
|---|---|---|
| Music | Album art, playback progress, play/pause and track skipping, synced lyrics, plus music lights that pulse to the beat. | Current track and album art with playback controls through Windows media sessions. Music shares the workspace with tasks and project tools. |
| Visual customization | The Store names 9 background effects, including Ambient, which follows album colours; also materials, card styles, accents, corner shape and size. | Album-driven moving colour across the music card, a personal expanded-notch wallpaper, and 7 Pomodoro themes in the current .NET 7 build. |
| Focus and tasks | Work and break focus timer, task list and stopwatch. | Adjustable focus and break sessions with tasks and notes; drag the Pomodoro out onto the desktop and choose from 7 themes. |
| System surface | Volume and brightness popups, Bluetooth alerts, battery and charging, weather, notifications, CPU, memory and network speed. | Battery and selected system readings, with music, focus and work cards. It does not claim Smart Notch’s lyric or weather experience. |
| Controls and position | Volume, brightness, mute, Night light and Do not disturb; notch or full bar at the top, left or right edge. | Top-screen notch with favorite app and project shortcuts, plus display and vertical-position settings. |
| Developer workflow | The Store listing focuses on media, system controls, focus and personalisation; it does not describe GitHub or code tools. | GitHub contribution activity, project links, installed AI app shortcuts, clipboard filters, notes and a code playground. |

Which extra step do you take most often?
If you regularly change volume or brightness, watch system activity, want synced lyrics or enjoy an album-colour ambient background, Smart Notch is built for those moments. The Store explicitly lists those features, along with Bluetooth and charging alerts. BuildNotch does not offer an equivalent lyrics-first music experience.
If the next step is opening a project, checking GitHub activity, finding an AI app or reusing a copied code snippet, BuildNotch keeps those actions beside the music controls. Its Pomodoro can be dragged out of the notch to remain visible on the desktop, and it has 7 timer themes. Smart Notch also has a work/break timer, so the differentiator is how the timer fits the rest of your workflow.
About effects and performance claims.
The 9 named Smart Notch background effects are from its Microsoft Store description: Visualizer, Waves, Synthwave, Aurora, Fireflies, Holographic, Topographic, Night sky and Ambient. That is a count of listed effect names, not a benchmark or a promise that every effect is available in every version.
The Store describes Smart Notch as light on CPU and memory. We have not measured both apps under the same conditions, so this page makes no claim that either one is faster or uses less battery. Test on your own PC if resource use decides the purchase.
Which should you choose?
Choose Smart Notch if you want music with synced lyrics, reactive visuals, device alerts and a broad set of system controls.
Choose BuildNotch if you want music and focus in a workspace for projects, GitHub, AI apps, copied snippets and notes—with a detachable Pomodoro and 7 timer themes.
